Mumbai, Jul 15 (PTI) Police busted an adulterated milk racket operating in Mumbai’s Goregaon (West) area and arrested two persons allegedly involved in the illegal trade on Wednesday, said officials.
During
a raid carried out by the Crime Branch, police seized around 575 litres of adulterated milk, milk packaging and sealing equipment, 224 empty pouches, a mobile phone and other materials collectively valued at Rs 70,404, they said.
According to police, the arrested accused, Krishna Venkaya Pally (48) and Ravi Patipaka, were operating from a building on Link Road in suburban Goregaon (West).
The duo allegedly opened milk pouches of reputed dairy brands, removed a portion of the original milk, mixed it with water, resealed the packets and sold them to unsuspecting consumers, they said.
The Crime Detection Branch of the Crime Branch’s Unit 11 in Kandivali received specific intelligence about the illegal activity. Acting on the information, Crime Branch officials, along with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) personnel, conducted a joint raid on the building on Wednesday morning, said police.
The accused were allegedly caught while opening branded milk packets, adding water and resealing them for sale, they stated.
A case was registered against the two accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Essential Commodities Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Further investigation was underway to ascertain the duration of the racket’s operation and identify the areas where the adulterated milk was being supplied. PTI ZA RSY
