Over 100 mm of rain in just a few hours on Monday led to waterlogging in many parts of the city during peak office hours.
The rain threw life out of gear as traffic came to a standstill for hours. Across the region’s streets and highways, several cars lined up in traffic jams stretching almost 7 to 8 km.
The worst
congestion was on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway (NH-48) near Rajiv Chowk, where a water pump had to be deployed to drain the inundated road.
Traffic jams were also reported across Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road and Southern Peripheral Road. The entire stretch from Vatika Chowk to Tulip Chowk was reportedly choked.
Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk and IFFCO Chowk too saw massive traffic jams.
Meanwhile, visuals that went viral on social media showed the 7-8 km stretch on the Delhi-Jaipur highway completely choked for hours after the heavy rainfall.
In its advisory, the District Disaster Management Authority, Gurugram, said, “Today, from 3 pm to 7 pm, heavy rainfall of over 100 mm has been recorded in Gurugram City. Indian Meteorological Department in its forecast has issued Orange Alert: Heavy to very Heavy rainfall on 02-09-2025.”
It also advised all corporate offices and private
institutions in the region to ask their employees to work from home, and schools in the district to conduct online classes on Tuesday.
Chaos and hours of waiting in traffic in the “Millennium City” pushed many people to social media to share their woes.
A netizen wrote on X, “Office me hi so jaun aaj? (Should I sleep in the office today?)”
Over 20 vehicles reportedly broke down in the evening, adding to the chaos.
Meanwhile, some people chose to spend the night in nearby hotels instead of returning home to avoid the rush.
Gurugram resident Manisha Kacker told CNN-News18 that she had advised her husband not to travel through the waterlogged Golf Course Extension Road and instead stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
“At least he is safe there,” she said.
Another Gurugram resident, Neha Patil, said, “One of my office colleagues also just booked a hotel nearby to stay and is not coming back… All the roads are completely
flooded.”
As visuals of the massive traffic jams across the city went viral, several opposition leaders targeted the BJP-led government.
Congress leader Gaurav Pandhi posted a video of the long traffic jam and called it “third-class nonsense.”
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini spoke to all District Deputy Commissioners and took stock of the situation caused by the prolonged and excessive rains.
Meanwhile, water gushed through streets and flooded basements in residential complexes and commercial hubs
like Udyog Vihar.
The service road of Dwarka Expressway was also shut after large amounts of water accumulated there. Reports said the drainage system of the expressway gave way during the heavy rainfall.
Notably, this stretch links Delhi’s Dwarka to Kherki Daula and several parts of Gurugram.
The DDMA has issued an advisory to companies, asking them to allow employees to work from home as heavy to very heavy rain is expected on Tuesday, September 2.
Schools have been told to
hold online classes.
The Deputy Commissioner also shared the advisory on X and requested people to cooperate with officials.
"The district administration appeals to the public to exercise caution in view of the weather conditions, avoid stepping out of their homes unnecessarily, and follow the administration's guidelines," the Gurugram DC posted on X.
The downpour disrupted daily life not only in Gurgaon but across Delhi NCR.

Meanwhile, the Yamuna River has already reached the evacuation level of 206 metres. A heavy release of water from the Hathnikund Barrage has raised the river to 206 metres at the Old Railway Bridge.
For Delhi, the warning level is 204.50 metres and the danger level is 205.33 metres. Evacuation starts once the water level touches 206 metres.
