What is the story about?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with Iceland Prime Minister Kristrun Mjoll Frostadottir ahead of the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo.
PM Modi is scheduled to participate in the summit alongside the prime ministers of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden as India looks to deepen strategic engagement with the Nordic region. The summit builds on previous meetings held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022.
Earlier, the Indian PM announced that India and Norway had elevated bilateral relations to a “green strategic partnership” following talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in Oslo.
In a post on X, Modi described the discussions as “fruitful conversations” and said the upgraded partnership would enhance cooperation in clean energy, sustainable growth, green shipping and the blue economy.
“One of the most important highlights was the upgrading of our bilateral partnership to a green strategic partnership, which will strengthen cooperation within clean energy, sustainable growth, the blue economy and green shipping, as well as several other areas,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister said both countries also explored ways to strengthen collaboration in innovation, research, education, healthcare and skills development.
He also welcomed Norway’s decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, calling it a significant step in maritime cooperation.
India and Norway on Monday signed 12 agreements and initiatives during Modi’s visit, marking a major expansion in ties across climate action, maritime cooperation, technology and scientific research.
Both sides adopted a joint statement elevating ties to a Green Strategic Partnership, reflecting a shared focus on sustainable development, green industrial growth and clean energy transition. The agreement also aims to combine Norwegian technological expertise with India’s manufacturing capabilities and scale.
Among the key outcomes, Norway formally joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, reaffirming support for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
India will also participate in Nor-Shipping 2027 with a dedicated India Pavilion to boost cooperation in shipbuilding, port infrastructure and green shipping technologies under the blue economy framework.
The two countries additionally signed an agreement on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space to expand cooperation between their respective space agencies and encourage investment in the sector.
A major highlight of the visit was the launch of the India-Norway Digital Development Partnership, which seeks to advance cooperation in digital public infrastructure, digital public goods and open digital ecosystems. The initiative is expected to support India’s Digital India mission and facilitate DPI-led transformation across Global South countries in partnership with Norway.
Norway marks the fourth leg of Modi’s five-nation tour, which has also included visits to the UAE, the Netherlands and Sweden.
