Fresh trouble for the drama
The legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum through their Counsel Adv Tousif Warsi have filed a petition in Indore High Court seeking an immediate stay on the release of the upcoming film "HAQ" starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi.
Their claim is that the movie hurts the sentiments of the Muslim community and portrays Sharia law in a bad misogynistic light. They also claim that the makers of the film have NO legal rights from the legal heirs of Shah Bano Begum.
The Indore high court is expected to hear the matter shortly. The makers of the film are being represented by Hitesh Jain, Parinaam Law and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik.
This is what the legal notice reads:
That my client, Ms. Siddiqua Beghum Khan, is the lawful biological daughter and one of the surviving legal heirs of Late Smt. Shah Bano Begum, whose life and struggles are matters of both personal and historical significance and the same is depicted by you noticees in your upcoming movie with the title "HAQ" of which you notice no. 1 is the Director,
Noticee no. 2 being production partner, notice no. 3 being the promoter and notice no. 4 being the authority issuing certification and release dated of the movie HAQ on 07/11/2025.That my client has recently become aware of an upcoming feature film titled "Haq", though its teasers on social media being produced, directed, and promoted under your respective banners, which explicitly or implicitly portrays the personal and private life of Late Smt. Shah Bano Begum, including sensitive family events, personal experiences, and social circumstances.
That the aforesaid film "Haq" has been conceptualized, scripted, promoted, and publicized without obtaining prior consent or authorization from my client, who holds moral and legal rights over the depiction of her late mother's personal life.
While the film's trailer has been widely appreciated, it has become a polarising topic for the internet - with progressive secularists rooting for the film and hardliners speaking ill of the film.
