What is the story about?
Dua Lipa, Rihanna, the Beckhams (sans their son, Brooklyn), Jennifer Lawrence… What do all of them have in common? All of them are in Paris currently attending Couture Week where fashion houses — think Christian Dior, Schiaparelli and even our very own Gaurav Gupta and Rahul Mishra — spotlight their craftsmanship to the highest degree.
Amid this melee of high fashion and celebrities, the presence of two individuals has stuck out for many. It’s none other than Lauren Sanchez and Jeff Bezos. The couple were seen on the opening day of Paris Couture Week sitting in the front row of not just the Dior show but also for US designer Daniel Roseberry’s dramatic Schiaparelli show.
What are we to make of the appearance of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos at Paris Couture Week? Was this a mere personal shopping trip or does their appearance at the Schiaparelli and Dior couture shows represent something more strategic?
We try to decode it all.
On Monday, the former journalist and billionaire husband kicked off Haute Couture Week, attending the Schiaparelli and Dior Spring 2026 fashion shows.
Sanchez cut a striking figure in a fire-engine red skirt suit at the first show of the day, coordinating with front-row seat-mate Anna Wintour, who arrived in a red-striped coat. She accessorised with matching red suede pumps and red-tinged sunglasses. She added a standout alligator Schiaparelli handbag adorned with the house’s signature surrealist face motif, complete with gilded lips and nose.
The Amazon founder, meanwhile, complemented his wife at the runway show in a sleek all-black ensemble. What was most striking about his look though was his new silver beard, which he’s been growing out since last winter.
A few hours later, Sanchez opted for a wardrobe change, opting for a pale blue suit with an enormous fur collar for her appearance at the Dior show, where she and her husband also posed with the house’s creative director Jonathan Anderson and Dior CEO Delphine Arnault.
When you think of couture, one’s mind wouldn’t think up of Lauren Sanchez Bezos or her husband, Jeff Bezos. However, in the recent past, the Bezos couple have been trying to seal their presence in the world of fashion.
At their wedding in Venice in 2025, which was dubbed by many as the ‘nuptials of the year’, Sanchez was seen wearing a couture Schiaparelli dress for the welcome dinner.
She attended the Met Gala in 2024, wearing a mirrored strapless gown by Oscar de la Renta. Moreover, last November, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the couple would sponsor the 2026 Met Gala, placing themselves at the centre of one of fashion’s most prestigious cultural events of the year.
The Bezos’ involvement with the Met Gala quickly drew criticism on social media, but Wintour has defended the move. “I think Lauren is going to be a wonderful asset to the museum and to the event,” Wintour told
CNN last year. “We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity. And she’s a great lover of costume and obviously of fashion.”
So, what exactly are Sanchez Bezos and her husband doing in France? Have they just come to take in the fashion or is there something more brewing?
There are speculations that the positioning of Bezos and his wife alongside Diego Della Valle, fellow billionaire and owner of the Tod’s Group who bought Schiaparelli in 2007, that the Amazon founder may be considering purchasing the fashion house.
There are also rumours that the Amazon founder, who is also the owner of Washington Post, is eyeing a purchase of Condé Nast, the parent company of ‘fashion bible’ Vogue.
The Newhouse family, who have owned Condé Nast since 1959 and continue to hold it privately under their media empire, Advance Publications, insist their titles are not on the market. And in July, a source close to Bezos told The Mail on Sunday that it was “totally untrue” that he was considering buying Condé Nast.
But it wouldn’t be a total surprise if Bezos was indeed looking to acquire the house behind the magazine that decides what’s cool and not. As
The Telegraph noted, with Vogue in his pocket, Bezos would wield some control over ideas of desirability and aspiration.
Moreover, Amazon’s effort to enter the high-fashion world failed as it struggled to attract any top-tier brands. But if Vogue was to belong to Bezos, all of this would change.
For Sanchez, it’s a chance to rub shoulders with the priests and priestesses of the fashion world. Some even suggest that her appearance at Couture Week is in line with her following in the footsteps of Kim Kardashian – another former outsider turned high-fashion darling – and is hoping to launch a brand of her own.
As Fiona Golfar, the former editor-at-large of British Vogue, told The Telegraph, “It would make sense for Bezos to want to buy Condé Nast. Clearly, they are both having a lot of fun in that world and want to embed themselves in it even further — and it ties into Amazon, and would give him a lot of cultural clout.”
Grazia also noted in one of their reports that appearance of the couple at the Paris couture is not just about buying clothes, but a board meeting for their latest enterprise: building legacy, influence, and cultural capital in the high stake’s world of high fashion.
The question, however, remains: Will they become fashion’s newest darlings or will they remain outsiders?
