What is the story about?
The 2026 Met Gala saw Mukesh Ambani's daughter Isha Ambani make a style statement like no one else. She made a stunning appearance at the grand event and the pictures have gone viral on social media. Her stunning outfit that represented Indian fashion and art was designed by ace designer Gaurav Gupta.
Decoding the outfit
The saree was woven with threads of pure gold by artisans from Swadesh, an artisan-only retail brand launched by Reliance Retail. Talking about what she wore, Ambani told Vogue in an interview, "The blouse is full of my mother's jewellery pieces."
What designer Gaurav Gupta wrote
"Over 1800 carats of diamonds, alongside emeralds, polki and kundan, are embedded into the garment (the blouse), transforming it into a living surface of inheritance and form," designer Gaurav Gupta wrote in an Instagram post.
The designer also revealed, "At its core, a jewellery-integrated blouse set with heirloom stones from Nita Ambani’s private collection, bringing fine jewellery directly into couture. Over 1800 carats of diamonds, alongside emeralds, polki and kundan, are embedded into the garment, transforming it into a living surface of inheritance and form.
The blouse is paired with a handwoven gold tissue saree, one of the oldest living garments in the world. Its border is hand painted by National Award–winning @swadesh_online artisans and embroidered at the atelier, drawing from the Ajanta frescoes, among the earliest recorded depictions of the saree in Indian art. The drape carries forward a history that spans centuries, where the body and cloth exist in quiet continuity."
The post added, "Completing the look, a sculptural resin-draped cape forms a halo around the body, created by folding the gold tissue saree into a preserved, fluid structure, where textile becomes sculpture.
Crafted over 1200 hours by over 50 artisans, Isha’s ensemble brings together textile, jewellery, and form into a single, continuous expression."
But there's more to her outfit. Isha Ambani also carried a mango sculpture by Subodh Gupta in a crochet bag- A nod and homage to India's heritage.
