What is the story about?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the need for a human-centric approach to artificial intelligence, saying the technology's future should be shaped not just by innovation but also by values such as trust and responsibility.
In a post shared by the Prime Minister's Office on X, Modi welcomed the establishment of an India Chair on artificial intelligence at a university in Slovakia and said the initiative reflected the two countries' shared vision for the emerging technology.
“I am pleased that an India Chair on the subject of AI is being established at a university in Slovakia,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister added that AI should become “a powerful means of serving and advancing humanity”, stressing that its development should prioritise ethical considerations.
“We believe that the future of AI should be based not only on innovation, but also on trust, responsibility, and human dignity,” Modi said.
The remarks came during Modi's visit to Slovakia, marking the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in nearly 30 years. The visit is part of a broader effort by New Delhi to strengthen ties with European partners in areas ranging from trade and defence to technology and innovation.
Modi's engagements in Slovakia have focused on expanding cooperation in sectors seen as strategically important for both countries. Emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, have featured prominently as India seeks to position itself as a leading player in the global AI ecosystem while advocating responsible development of the technology.
The proposed India Chair is expected to promote academic collaboration and research between Indian and Slovak institutions. Such initiatives are aimed at encouraging knowledge exchange and strengthening partnerships in cutting-edge fields.
The Prime Minister's comments also echo India's broader position on AI governance. India has consistently argued that artificial intelligence should be developed in a manner that benefits society and safeguards human values, even as countries race to harness the technology's economic potential.
Modi's visit to Slovakia comes amid growing cooperation between India and European nations on digital technologies and innovation. The two sides are expected to explore opportunities in areas including research, education and advanced technologies as they seek to deepen their strategic partnership.
By highlighting the importance of “trust, responsibility, and human dignity”, Modi sought to reinforce India's message that the future of artificial intelligence should be centred on people, rather than technology alone.
