What is the story about?
The release of Jana Nayagan, widely believed to be Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before he shifts his focus fully to politics, has been officially postponed. The highly anticipated film, which was slated to hit theatres on January 9, 2026, was being positioned as Vijay’s big Pongal release, making the delay a significant development for fans and the trade alike.
Produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan (titled Jana Neta in Hindi) has been one of the most keenly tracked Indian films since its announcement, with every update drawing massive attention. The makers confirmed the postponement through an official statement shared on their social media handle, citing unforeseen circumstances behind the decision.
In their statement, the production house said, “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control. We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love. Your unwavering support is our greatest strength and means everything to the entire Jana Nayagan team.”
The announcement comes as a disappointment for Vijay’s fans, especially given the film’s symbolic importance. Jana Nayagan is widely regarded as the actor’s last cinematic outing before his full-time political plunge, following the launch of his political party and his repeated public statements about prioritising public life over films.
The row stems from the Central Board of Film Certification’s decision to pause the certification process and send the film for a fresh review by a newly formed committee, even though there were earlier indications that it would receive a U/A 16+ certificate after certain cuts. The sudden reversal has thrown Thalapathy Vijay’s highly anticipated film into uncertainty at the eleventh hour.
The matter has since landed in the High Court, with the producers moving the court over what they described as undue delays, despite having submitted the film more than a month ago under the Tatkal process. With the court’s verdict still pending, the certification impasse has directly led to the film’s release being pushed, barely two days before its scheduled theatrical debut.
Originally planned as a festive Pongal release, the film was expected to dominate the holiday box office. While the makers have not revealed the exact reason behind the delay, they have assured audiences that a new release date will be announced soon.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan also features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.
