What is the story about?
Multiple explosions were heard in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan as Israel launched a surprise retaliatory attack against a West Asian nation. The latest strikes came despite US President Donald Trump's repeated requests to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to "hit back".
The IRIB broadcaster reported that there have been “multiple explosions heard in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan”. The latest strikes are now seen as Israel's response to Iran's missile attack on the Jewish nation late Sunday.
Earlier, Iran launched 10 ballistic missiles on northern Israel . The Iranian authorities described it as retaliation for Israel's constant attacks on Southern Lebanon despite a ceasefire in place. This was the first time Iran directly attacked Israel since agreeing to a truce with the United States. The latest clashes have now taken a major toll on the peace efforts.
Iranian state television reported the sound of explosions being heard in Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz and Tehran, without immediately elaborating. In light of this, Iran closed its airspace around Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, the country’s main airfield.
As of now, Iranian officials offered no details on what had been struck, nor any damage information. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said that Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles in its attack on Monday morning, without elaborating.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military issued a short statement with the strikes starting shortwhile ago: “A short while ago, the Israeli Air Force struck military targets belonging to the Iranian terror regime in western and central Iran.” It did not elaborate.
Meanwhile, the White House is yet to respond to the matter; hence, it remains unclear if the US was briefed about the latest attack. US President Donald Trump earlier told a Fox News Channel reporter that he wanted the Iranians to stop firing missiles and return to the negotiating table. He also said that Israel’s strikes in Lebanon earlier Sunday were not coordinated with the US and “I’m not happy about it.”
Axios went on to report that Trump held a phone call with Netanyahu, urging him not to retaliate. At that time, the report maintained that the Israeli premier held off on the plan to hit back on Trump's request. However, the latest attacks indicate that it is far from the truth.
