What is the story about?
Iran has said that indirect talks with the United States have concluded in the Omani capital, Muscat.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday held indirect talks with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, a son‑in‑law of President Donald Trump, who has been a senior foreign policy negotiator in his second term despite having no formal position.
Iran’s state‑run Tasnim news agency reported that the Iranian delegation had left the venue after holding two rounds of indirect talks with the United States.
These talks are being seen as an attempt to arrive at an understanding to avert a confrontation that could spiral into a regional conflict. For weeks, Trump has frequently threatened Iran with strikes. He has deployed an armada to the region and beefed up the military presence with additional warplanes.
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al‑Busaidi mediated the indirect talks between Iran and the United States.
In a statement, the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that al‑Busaidi held separate consultations with both the Iranian delegation led by Araghchi and the American delegation led by Witkoff and Kushner.
“The consultations focused on preparing the appropriate conditions for resuming diplomatic and technical negotiations, while emphasising their importance, in light of the parties’ determination to ensure their success in achieving sustainable security and stability,” the statement said in Arabic.
There was no immediate response from the United States regarding the talks.
During the indirect talks, Araghchi said that even as Iran pursued diplomacy in the national interest, it maintained full readiness to “defend the country’s sovereignty and national security against any excessive demands or adventurism”, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The foreign ministry linked talks about Iran’s nuclear programme to Western sanctions.
In the run‑up to the talks in Oman, Iran has hinted that it is looking to reach an understanding on the nuclear programme in exchange for relief from Western sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy.
The foreign ministry further said that Iran outlined its viewpoints and proposals on the negotiation topics, as well as Iran’s demands and considerations, in the Oman‑mediated talks with the United States.
