US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Iran is in a “state of collapse” and has sought American assistance to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had informed Washington of its internal crisis and was requesting the reopening of the strategic waterway “as soon as possible”.
“Iran has just informed us that they are in a “State of Collapse.” They want us to “Open the Hormuz Strait,” as soon as possible, as they try to figure out their leadership situation (Which I believe they will be able to do!),” he wrote.
It was, however, not clear from Trump's social media post how Iran had communicated that message and Iran is yet to respond to the development.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy shipping route, and any disruption or reopening arrangements have significant geopolitical and economic implications.
On Monday, Iran put forward a new proposal for a ceasefire deal focused on opening the Strait of Hormuz, setting aside discussions on nuclear weapons, missiles, sanctions and other issues for later.
