What is the story about?
Weeks after intense political turmoil and the death of Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, his brother has accused elements within the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of being behind the killing.
He alleged that it was meant to dismantle the functioning of the nation and disrupt the general elections scheduled for February.
Osman Hadi was a student leader and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancho which is a cultural group that emerged from the July 2024 uprising that led to the removal of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was shot on December 12, in Dhaka which led to chaos across the country.
Two assailants on a motorcycle approached, and the pillion rider fired a single shot to his head before fleeing. He was later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on December 18.
His killing led to widespread unrest in the country. Violent protests erupted in the various parts of Dhaka. Several newspaper offices and cultural institutions were vandalised amid escalating tensions.
While addressing a protest gathering at Shahbagh, Osman Hadi’s brother, Sharif Omar Hadi accused the interim administration of engineering the assasination.
“You had Osman Hadi killed, and now you are trying to foil the election by using this as an issue,” he said, making a serious allegation against the Yunus-led government.
Omar emphasised that his brother has always advocated towards national security and the scheduling of the general elections by February. He also urged the political authorities to maintain swift trial and build a stable and strategic environment in the political setup.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh interim government’s finance adviser, Salehuddin Ahmed, sought to project stability on the diplomatic front, expressing confidence in improving ties with India. He said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has initiated steps to repair strained relations with New Delhi.
The investigation into Osman Hadi’s death is ongoing. Authorities and police officials are looking up to the matter to bring national harmony and deescalate tensions in the country.
