What is the story about?
As early numbers start to pour in, the new entrant TVK, led by Actor Joseph Vijay, has many surprised by leading in over a hundred constituencies. On Monday, the counting showed Vijay's party leading the poll battle in Tamil Nadu.
According to the Election Commission data, as of 2 pm, TVK is leading in 110 seats, followed by ADMK leading in 59 seats, while DMK is leading in 48. In the midst of this, Security has reportedly been tightened around the residence of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Neelangarai and the TVK party office in Panaiyur.
Hundreds of enthusiastic supporters have begun to gather as the debutant party shows a strong performance.
While speaking to PTI, TVK national spokesperson Felix Gerald expressed confidence that the party would form the government in Tamil Nadu with an absolute majority as initial election trends showed the party 'scaling high'. While TVK celebrates its win, here are 5 key seats people kept a close eye on.
The following are the key seats where prominent candidates were contesting.
1. Kolathur
The seat is considered one of the most politically charged in the state of Tamil Nadu. For the longest time, it has been a stronghold of DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin. Here, he was challenged by AIADMK's P Santhana Krishnan and TVK's VS Babu. In a surprising turn of events, VS Babu is leading the polls by a narrow margin with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister trailing behind.
2. Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni
The two constituencies were merged in 2008 and were held by Stalin's son Udhayanidhi. This year, he was challenged by the AIADMK's Adhi Rajaram, the NTK's Ayisha Begum, and the TVK's D Selvam. Stalin has managed to maintain the lead with TVK's D Selvam trailing behind with just 1,365 votes.
3. Edappadi
The crucial constituency had elected AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami consecutively since 2011. This year, he was going against DMK candidate Kaasi and the NTK's Priyadharshini. Here, the veteran AIADMK politician has a thunderous lead over an Independent candidate, Premkumar. K, close behind.
4. Perambur
The keenly observed seat was from where film star Vijay was making his electoral debut. He was pitted against DMK's RD Sekar, the PMK's M Thilagabama, and NTK's Vetri Tamizhan. Vijay is leading the contest with a massive majority, with DMK's Shekar trailing.
5. Katpadi
Another constituency which will be closely watched is Katpadi, which has been held by the DMK's Durai Murugan for a long time. This time, he was facing the AIADMK's V Ramu and the TVK's M Sudhakar. Currently, AIDMK's V. Ramu is leading with Sudhakar trailing behind.
