What is the story about?
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that negotiations with Iran remain active and could produce results within the next “one or two days”, even as Washington continues to enforce what he described as a fully effective blockade aimed at cutting off Tehran’s oil revenues.
Speaking to reporters at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, Trump stressed that diplomatic efforts with Iran had not been abandoned despite recent tensions in the region.
“Negotiations with Iran are ongoing,” Trump said, expressing optimism that talks could yield progress soon. He also reiterated the US administration’s position that pressure on Tehran remains intact, claiming that the blockade was “100 per cent effective.”
“We have no oil, no income getting through,” Trump said, arguing that the measures had significantly restricted Iran’s ability to generate revenue from energy exports.
Trump was also asked about reports of a military helicopter incident in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. He said the pilots involved were safe and that no injuries had been reported.
A formal report on the incident is expected to be released on Wednesday, he added.
Trump’s remarks came a day after Iran and Israel announced the suspension of their military operations against each other, signalling the beginning of a ceasefire after a brief period of hostilities.
Iran’s emergency military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, said on Monday that armed forces operations against Israel had been halted. The statement described the move as a cessation of military action but made clear that the decision was conditional and could be reversed if tensions rise again.
At the same time, Tehran warned that any renewed Israeli military activity would trigger a stronger response. Iranian officials specifically cautioned against further military action in southern Lebanon, saying that continued “aggression and acts of malice” would be met with “much more severe and crushing measures” than those seen previously.
The developments suggest a fragile pause in regional tensions, with diplomatic efforts continuing alongside military warnings from both sides.
While Trump expressed confidence that negotiations with Iran could soon produce results, uncertainty remains over whether the ceasefire and broader regional stability can be sustained in the coming days.
