In a significant step toward strengthening maritime ties, the Indian Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Vessel ICG Ship Sarthak arrived at Iran’s strategic port of Chabahar on December 16, making it the first-ever visit by an Indian Coast Guard ship to the facility, as reported by CNN-News18.
The port call, which will last until December 19, is part of the vessel’s ongoing deployment to Gulf countries. Officials say the visit will provide a platform for professional interactions between Indian and Iranian maritime forces.
During its stay, the crew of ICG Ship Sarthak will engage with the Iranian Navy and other maritime agencies through a series of activities, including joint training exercises in search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, and marine pollution response.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Sarthak, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, entered the strategic port of Chabahar, Islamic Republic of Iran, on 16 Dec 2025 as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to Gulf countries. The ship will remain in port till 19 Dec 2025.

What is the significance of these exercises?
The goal of these exercises is to enhance coordination and mutual understanding in handling maritime challenges.
The deployment is also seen as part of India’s broader efforts to maintain a strong presence in the Gulf region while fostering collaboration on maritime security, a critical concern given the strategic importance of Chabahar port for regional trade and connectivity.
The visit reflects a growing emphasis on cooperation in areas such as search and rescue missions, environmental protection, and law enforcement at sea—challenges that increasingly require joint efforts in international waters.
