What is the story about?
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has failed to achieve any of his long-term goals in Ukraine.
Four years after Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Stabb said the country has become not just more European but trans-Atlanticist, Nato has expanded, and the Russian global influence has shrunk as allies in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and Cuba have taken a beating.
Stubb further went on to flag Russian casualties and said it is losing up to 30-35,000 soldiers a month.
"How much of a better place is Ukraine today than they were a year ago? In the past four months —and sorry for being morbid— Ukraine has killed or wounded between 30,000 to 35,000 Russian soldiers per month. They have done so 95% with drones, at a ratio of one Ukrainian dead to five Russians dead," said Stubb.
The number is in line with independent assessments, such as by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which pegged Russian casualties in Ukrainian drone strikes at 33,988 in March.
Stubb's remarks have come at a time when Ukraine has retaken the most territory in the past 10 months. In March, as per the ISW, Ukraine had a net gain of around 27 square kilometres.

Stubb has emerged as a key go-between European allies and US President Donald Trump, particularly on European and Ukrainian affairs. He has advocated for continuing to support Ukraine in the war with Russia. Earlier this month, he said at a separate discussion that there appear to be three scenarios for how the war could proceed this year: it could prolong, it could end in a negotiated settlement, and one side could weaken due to external reasons.
Stubb said he believed that war would continue without a settlement and called upon allies to support Ukraine prepare for the next winter.
