Landslide Kills 11 in Central Java, Indonesia
A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Central Java has left 11 people dead, Indonesia’s disaster management agency said on Saturday, as search teams continued looking for another dozen residents still unaccounted for.
The incident occurred on Thursday in
Cilacap
city, where the collapse of a hillside buried around a dozen homes in
Cibeunying
village. Antara earlier reported that the depth of the debris,
estimated at 3 to 8 metres (10–25 feet) was making rescue efforts difficult.
“Eleven victims have been recovered so far — three yesterday and eight more today. Twelve individuals remain missing,” agency spokesperson Abdul
Muhari
told
Reuters
.
Indonesia’s wet season, which began in September and will run through April, brings an elevated threat of floods and intense rainfall, according to the national weather agency.
In January, another rain-induced landslide in
Pekalongan
, also in Central Java, claimed at least 25 lives.
