What is the story about?
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the near future on behalf of US President Donald Trump, marking another step in strengthening ties between India and the United States.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor took to X to share details of Marco Rubio’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the invitation extended on behalf of President Trump for a White House visit.
Rubio, who is on a four-day visit to India, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sewa Teerth in New Delhi on Saturday.
"We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies - areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!," wrote Sergio.
Rubio arrived in the country earlier in the day for a four-day trip that will also see him participate in a meeting of Quad foreign ministers.
Welcoming Rubio to the Indian capital, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the visit would further deepen bilateral ties between the two nations.
“Warmly welcome Secretary of State Marco Rubio of the USA to New Delhi. His visit will add further strength to India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Jaiswal tweeted.
A week after accompanying President Trump on his visit to Beijing, Rubio arrived in New Delhi for his first-ever trip to India, where he held more than an hour of closed-door talks with PM Modi, according to a US official.
Before departing on Tuesday, Rubio is also scheduled to attend a meeting of Quad foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan and the United States, a grouping widely viewed as a strategic counterbalance to China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean region.
