Indian passport holders have something to cheer about this year. Their travel document has gained strength on the global stage, but there are also some setbacks to keep in mind before planning international trips. According to the latest Henley Passport Index 2026, India’s passport has climbed up in rank, reflecting improved global mobility for its citizens.
Rankings improve, but access drops
The Henley Index, a respected global ranking of passports based on visa-free access, placed India at 80th in 2026, up five spots from 85th last year. This means Indian travellers can now enter a total of 55 countries without a prior visa, which includes visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival or electronic travel authorisation options.
However, the number of countries Indians can visit without a visa has slightly decreased compared to the previous year. That’s because Iran and Bolivia have revised their entry requirements, ending their visa-free or visa-on-arrival arrangements for Indian passport holders. As a result, those destinations now require Indians to obtain a visa before travel, adding an extra step to trip planning.
What this means for travellers
For people planning trips abroad in 2026, the good news is that India’s overall passport strength is improving, offering more convenient access to popular regions. Still, the changes in entry rules for Iran and Bolivia serve as reminders that visa policies can shift quickly, and travellers need to double-check requirements before boarding flights.
Globally, passports from countries like Singapore, Japan and South Korea continue to rank at the top of the mobility index, with access to nearly 190-plus destinations without prior visas—a stark contrast to India’s 55.
In short, while Indian passport holders enjoy slightly better travel freedom in 2026, it’s wise to stay updated on changing visa rules and entry requirements before finalising international plans.
