Karan Johar has announced a double surprise for fans. The filmmaker has confirmed that his 2006 relationship drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is being adapted into a long-form web series with a younger cast, while Koffee With Karan Season 9 is also set to return around Diwali this year.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to get a modern streaming reboot
Speaking in a recent interview with The Week, Johar revealed that Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is officially being reimagined as a long-form series. He said the new version would feature a Gen Z cast, suggesting the story will be reshaped for younger audiences and today’s relationship dynamics. He said, “We’re actually adapting it into a long-form series. The root of that film, it was, of course, released in 2006 to very polarised responses.
The original film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta, and explored marriage, loneliness, emotional dissatisfaction and infidelity, themes that sparked major debate when it released in 2006.
Unlike many glossy romance dramas of its time, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna dealt with flawed adults making morally messy choices. That emotional complexity could benefit from a longer streaming format, allowing deeper exploration of marriages, affairs, guilt and personal reinvention.
He said, "I had many people come up to me and ask me whether I was unwell after that film, because they said, ‘How can you endorse infidelity?’ And I was like, ‘How can you endorse something that’s already so sold out’?"
Who could be in the Gen Z cast?
Johar has not announced casting details or the platform yet. But the mention of a younger ensemble has already sparked speculation over whether Dharma-backed younger stars or fresh faces may headline the adaptation.
Koffee With Karan Season 9 also confirmed
In another major update, Johar confirmed that Koffee With Karan will return with Season 9 around Diwali 2026. The celebrity chat show remains one of India’s most talked-about entertainment properties, known for headline-making revelations, rapid-fire moments and star pairings.
