What is the story about?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called out Russia for not respecting its own unilateral ceasefire after Moscow carried out fresh attacks against the country on Friday.
"On the Russian side, there was not even a token attempt to cease fire on the front. As we did over the past 24 hours, Ukraine will respond in kind today as well," Zelenskyy wrote on X, noting that Russian forces targeted frontline positions overnight.
Russia's two-day unilateral ceasefire went into effect early on Friday to mark Victory Day on May 9 and protect the parade to be held tomorrow. It is one of the most important patriotic events for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian president added that Russia lobbed "more than 850 strikes with drones of various types" along with more than 140 strikes on Kyiv's frontline positions.
Russia on Monday unilaterally announced a ceasefire for Victory Day celebrations and warned Ukraine that non-compliance would be met with massive strikes on Kyiv.
In a statement in Russian, the country’s defence ministry said President Vladimir Putin had declared a ceasefire on May 8-9 and expected Ukraine to abide by it.
Russia observes Victory Day on May 8-9 to mark the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is a national holiday that traditionally involves a major military parade. However,
this year’s celebrations will not feature any parade or military vehicles
amid fears of a potential Ukrainian strike.
Russia said Friday it intercepted drones bound for Moscow after warning of a potential retaliatory strike on Kyiv.
Russia’s defence ministry said on Thursday that its forces had destroyed almost 350 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Another 20 were intercepted in the two hours after Moscow’s truce began, according to a series of updates by city mayor Sergei Sobyanin posted on Russian social media Max.
