Kuwait on Thursday condemned what it described as an Iranian drone-and-missile attack targeting its territory, calling it a “dangerous escalation,” while the United States confirmed that a ballistic missile launched toward Kuwait overnight was successfully intercepted.
According to AFP, in a statement, Kuwait’s foreign ministry expressed its “strongest condemnation and denunciation of the criminal Iranian attacks that targeted the territory of the State of Kuwait with missiles and drones.”
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Iran launched a ballistic missile toward Kuwait at 10:17 pm ET, adding that Kuwaiti forces intercepted the projectile before impact.
The developments came amid renewed exchanges between US and Iranian forces, hours after US President Donald Trump pledged to secure a favourable agreement to end the conflict despite a fragile ceasefire remaining in place.
According to a CNN report, citing US official, American forces carried out strikes near the Strait of Hormuz targeting a site believed to pose a threat to US troops and commercial shipping routes. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched an attack on a US air base linked to the American operation.
“This egregious ceasefire violation by the Iranian regime occurred hours after Iranian forces launched five one-way attack drones that posed a clear threat in and near the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said.
The US military added that all five drones were intercepted, while a sixth launch attempt from an Iranian ground control site in Bandar Abbas was prevented.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it reserves the right to take “any and all necessary measures” to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
