What is the story about?
After getting launched about three years ago, Meta’s Threads is now witnessing more daily mobile users as compared to Elon Musk’s X according to a report by market intelligence firm Similarweb.
The report shows that Thread has about 141.5 million daily active iOS and Android global app users as of January 7th, compared to 125 million users for X.
Thread followed a steady growth from the time it was invented and now the results show long-term usage.
X has recently seen a troubling controversy where its Grok AI showed some explicitly sexual images which were non-consensual. The controversy grappled with Elon Musk and brewed some tensions for him. Concerns over the images have led California’s attorney general to open an investigation into Grok, following similar probes in regions including the UK, the European Union, India and Brazil.
Threads’ growth on mobile may be driven by other factors, including promotion across Meta’s larger apps such as Facebook and Instagram, a focus on creators and the rollout of new features.
X still has more mobile users than Threads in the US, according to Similarweb, but notes that Threads is catching up, and that X has half as many daily active mobile users in the US now as it did last year.
Web traffic remains another story as of January 13th, X was attracting 145.4 million daily web visitors, compared to just 8.5 million on Threads.
X continues to top the web table, but we spend our time on mobile phones and Threads is winning the social battle according to the new estimates.
Meta may have won the mobile battle, according to these new estimates, but with only 150 million daily users combined, it has an uphill struggle to catch up with X’s more than 270 million.
