What is the story about?
US President Donald Trump reportedly told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that ending the ongoing war in Ukraine was "critical" and that he was ready to help. According to the Russian news agency Tass News, Trump shared his concerns over the prolonged war in a phone call with Putin on Sunday.
Since the call took place before Trump's announcement, the report stated that the American leader informed the Russian president that the US was nearing a peace deal with Iran, which would mark the end of the war that has been raging on since February 28. Yuri Ushakov, an advisor to the Russian leaders, said that the call between the two leaders lasted for about an hour, describing it as "friendly and frank".
Not only this, but ahead of the G7 summit , Trump also spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reflecting on ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war. “I wished President Trump every success, first and foremost in his efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine,” the Ukrainian president said in a post on the Telegram app.
“We talked about what could help to bring peace closer right now, and I updated the president on the latest developments on the battlefield and how our position has strengthened,” he said. “We have some good ideas that could help bring peace closer," the Ukrainian leader furthered.
Trump's latest push for a peace deal is coming at a time when fighting between Russia and Ukraine has continued for more than four years since Russia launched an invasion into Ukraine in February 2022.
The war has now lasted longer than
World War I, which was fought for 1,566 days. It is pertinent to note that the peace negotiations between the two warring nations have largely been on a pause as the war in Iran continues. However, Trump officials have recently stated that they want the war in Ukraine to end “as quickly as possible”.
During the phone call, the Russian leader also wished his American counterpart on his 80th birthday in an “informal” manner, according to Ushakov. “Dear Mr President, dear Donald, I wholeheartedly congratulate you, such a bright, remarkable person and politician, on your 80th birthday!” Putin said in his greeting on the Kremlin website, quoted by Russian news agencies
In Putin's greeting, he said that he “valued the mutual understanding between us, which allows us to discuss ... even the most complex issues on the bilateral and international agenda openly and frankly.”
“I am certain that together we could truly give Russian-American relations a new quality, and also do much to ensure security and stability on the world stage,” the Russian leader wrote. The two leaders met last year in Alaska in August 2025 in a bid to reach a settlement of the war pitting Ukraine against Russia. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy also wished Trump on his birthday.
