India has welcomed the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and expressed hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday said that India expects unimpeded transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
"We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict," the MEA further said.
The United States and Iran on Tuesday agreed to a two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan. Both the sides are expected to meet in Islamabad on Friday to start negotiations for the permanent end of the war.
