What is the story about?
A 77-year-old woman is missing after falling overboard on a cruise ship on New Year’s Day.
The incident occurred on the Nieuw Statendam cruise ship, which was sailing off the coast of Cuba. The United States Coast Guard has confirmed that the search for the passenger, who remains unnamed, has now been called off.
But what happened? What do we know? Let’s take a closer look.
First, let’s take a brief look at the ship. The Nieuw Statendam cruise ship is owned by the Holland America Line. It is a Pinnacle Class ship that has been in service since 2018. Nieuw Statendam travels to the Bahamas as well as Mexico, as per The New York Times. It is 975 feet long and nearly 115 feet wide. The ship can carry 2,692 guests, according to Holland America Line.
The Nieuw Statendam had set sail from Florida’s Fort Lauderdale for a week-long cruise in the eastern Caribbean on Saturday (December 27). It was due back on Saturday (December 3). The incident occurred when the Nieuw Statendam was in the Caribbean, around 64 kilometres off the coast of Sabana, Cuba.
According to a report by The Independent, the woman's identity, including her name and nationality, has not yet been made public. What caused the victim to fall into the water, and the circumstances surrounding it, remain unclear.
The cruise line said that the ship's captain and crew had initiated search and rescue procedures immediately after the incident came to light and that they were working with the US Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard then deployed the cutter USCGC William Trump and helicopters from the air station in Florida’s Clearwater to aid in the rescue. The search, which lasted for over 15 hours, covered more than 1,700 square kilometres.
The search for the woman was suspended at sundown. As a result of the search, the ship cancelled its scheduled stopover in Florida’s Key West today (January 2).
Holland America Line has issued a statement expressing condolences following the incident.
The Independent quoted the firm as saying, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that while sailing in waters north of Cuba, a guest on Nieuw Statendam went overboard earlier today.”
The company said its team is providing assistance to the victim’s family. “Our family assistance team is supporting the guest's family, and our thoughts are with the guest's loved ones during this difficult time,” the firm added.
The Holland America Line is a well-known cruise operator that is headquartered in the Netherlands. It is a division of Carnival Corporation & plc. Launched as the newest addition to Holland America Line’s fleet, Nieuw Statendam carries forward the legacy of five earlier vessels that bore the name Statendam, reflecting the company’s long maritime heritage.
Designed with a focus on luxury and comfort, the ship features modern amenities, expansive public spaces and state-of-the-art facilities. It is capable of accommodating thousands of passengers on itineraries across the Caribbean, Europe and other global destinations.
Such incidents occur more frequently than guests imagine. As per Business Insider, at least 10 people fell off cruise ships in 2023, of whom only two survived. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, in 2019 at least 25 people on cruise ships fell overboard. Of these, 17 died.
