What is the story about?
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday called for strengthened unity between Ukraine and its ally Poland, warning that Moscow could target Warsaw if Russia’s invasion is not halted.
“Without Ukraine’s independence, Moscow will inevitably turn its attention to Poland. That is why it is vital that we continue to exist, that you continue to exist, and that both Ukraine and Poland endure. It is crucial that we stand together,” Zelenskyy said during a joint press conference with Polish counterpart Karol Nawrocki.
Zelenskyy's visit to Warsaw is intended to ensure that relations with key ally Poland remain stable, regardless of any change in power in Warsaw.
Poland's current government is a solid backer of Ukraine, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk acting as one of the most visceral advocates of Kyiv in international fora. But presidential election results indicate that the previous, nationalist governing party Law and Justice might return to power in 2027. And Nawrocki, who won elections with the backing of Law and Justice, has been playing hard to get.
Zelenskyy also said his country could offer advice to Poland on how to defend against drones and ensure better security in the Baltic Sea region.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Zelenskyy also invited Polish businesses to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction. He invited Nawrocki to visit Kyiv, adding that Ukrainian and Polish ties should remain strong amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
