What is the story about?
Iran on Monday announced reaching an understanding with Oman over the route for transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
"An understanding has been reached regarding the map of the transit route. But we had planned, and still plan, to finalise the understanding in the form of a package: The map plus a joint statement, " said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
Iran and Oman are currently in the final process of formalising the understanding. They will issue a joint statement after reaching the final agreement.
While Baghaei did not go into the specifics, the details of the Iran-Oman deal in the making have been reported earlier. Under the terms of the deal, ships would enter the Strait via the northern route along the Iranian coast and exit via the southern route along the Omani coast.
Prior to the conflict, ships could use either route for entry or exit. Currently, both the United States and Iran have blockaded the Strait. While Iran has been bombing every ship in the Persian Gulf not following its diktat,
such as the requirement for following the northern route
, the United States is attacking any ship approaching Iran as it has been enforcing a blockade of maritime traffic to and from Iran.
If US President Donald Trump likes the Oman-Iran deal, the development could pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a deescalation in the US-Iran war. The deescalation could serve as an opening for him to seek the face-saving exit that he had been desperately chasing for months.
While the United States and Israel launched the war against Iran with grand designs to overthrow the Islamic Republic and install a puppet ruler, the war boiled down to the status of the Strait for Trump as he realised he could not win the war militarily.
As Firstpost previously reported, the interim deal that he signed essentially turned the Strait from international waters into Iran's territorial waters. But Trump's refusal to abide by the deal reignited the conflict.
