President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have launched a public attack on late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, calling for his immediate termination from ABC News following a controversial monologue that described the First Lady as an "expectant widow."
The fallout comes at a moment of extreme tension in the capital, occurring just 48 hours after a security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner where a suspect was apprehended after firing shots near the venue.
The controversy stems from a segment aired last Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, in which the comedian performed a parody of the WHCA dinner. Standing behind a mock podium, Kimmel directed several barbs at the First Family, specifically targeting the First Lady.
"Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful," Kimmel said during the skit. "Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow."
Kimmel followed the remark with a joke about the First Lady’s upcoming birthday, suggesting her celebration would consist of "looking out a window and whispering, ‘What have I done?’"

The First Lady responds
In a rare and direct public statement posted to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Melania Trump broke her silence, slamming Kimmel’s words as "hateful and violent."
Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.
People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to…

Trump shared the same sentiments hours later on Truth Social, praising his wife’s statement and taking aim at the network's parent company, Disney.
"I appreciate that so many people are incensed by Kimmel’s despicable call to violence," the President posted. "Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC."
The rhythm of rivalry
This is not the first time the Trump administration has sought to remove Kimmel from the airwaves.
In September 2025, ABC briefly suspended the host following a monologue regarding the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During that period, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, threatened regulatory action against the network, and several major affiliates pulled the show from their local broadcasts.
Despite that suspension, Disney ultimately extended Kimmel’s contract through the 2026–2027 season.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also weighed in on Monday evening, linking Kimmel’s jokes to a broader climate of hostility. She argued that labelling the President and his family with "deranged" rhetoric fuels real-world violence, specifically referencing the Saturday shooting incident at the Washington Hilton involving suspect Cole Tomas Allen.

"Those who constantly, falsely label the President as a threat to democracy are fueling this kind of violence," Leavitt told reporters.
ABC News and Disney are yet to issue a formal response to the latest demands for Kimmel’s firing.
