What is the story about?
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor hailed the India-US ties as he attended the USISPF Leadership Summit. The envoy noted India's rise, adding that the US wants to partner with the country extensively.
Recalling a conversation with an Indian minister, Gor said, "I was with an Indian minister in New Delhi. He told me that whatever you hear on the news, India and America will still be friends in 50 years."
Gor highlighted that President Donald Trump regards Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "a friend". He said that Trump had once asked for a phone call with PM Modi, underscoring the friendship shared by the two leaders.
"I was in the UFC in Miami with President Trump. We were sitting backstage, and he said to me, 'Let's call the prime minister.' I told him that it was 6 AM in India, but he said Modi 'will be up. He is like me. He doesn't sleep," Gor said.
He added, "When you are friends with somebody, not everything has to be scheduled. Pres. Trump truly considers PM Modi a friend. And it's not the same way with every leader in the world. I have seen leaders with whom we schedule things because he does not consider them at the same level as the PM."
Gor has said that Washington is working on President Donald Trump’s visit to India, adding that it might not happen during the midterm elections that are scheduled for November this year.
“It’s not any time during the midterms… When the Prime Minister met him in France, the Indian side brought it up that he has been invited. We would love to make that happen sooner than later,” Gor told
ANI.
Gor added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the US during the G20 Summit in December 2026. He said that Secretary Marco Rubio has invited PM Modi to visit the US.
