Meghan Markle is stepping back into acting, and doing it on her own terms. The Duchess of Sussex will make a brief on-screen return with a cameo in Close Personal Friends, marking her first acting role in nearly eight years.
A playful return to the screen
In the film, Meghan Markle plays a version of herself in what is described as a self-aware, comedic cameo. The film, which explores the blurred lines between celebrity and ordinary life, features an ensemble cast including Brie Larson, Lily Collins and Henry Golding.
Her appearance is being seen as a light, almost tongue-in-cheek return to the industry she stepped away from in 2018 after leaving Suits and marrying Prince Harry.
“Insane” and “surreal”: Co-star Jack Quaid reacts
Co-star Jack Quaid opened up about working with Markle, calling the experience both “insane”. Quaid told ET, “It was insane,”when asked about working with Markle. He added, “The main cast of it is myself, Brie Larson, Henry Golding and Lily Collins, which is just an incredible group of people to be a part of. And every day, we went to set and we just tried our best to make each other laugh.”
The actor also hinted at the film’s tone, calling it more of a “com-rom” (comedy-driven romance) rather than a traditional romantic film. He said, “I thought it was going to be more of a rom-com. I’m calling it a com-rom, I think it’s more comedy forward, slightly. But it's about two couples, I don’t know if I can say anything else, but I just had a blast making that movie.”
A source told People that she was “very relaxed and happy” on the sets, and was “very sweet and down‑to‑earth.” It was also reported that she introduced herself to each cast member, making the ambience friendly and relaxed.
First role since royal life
Markle’s cameo is significant for one key reason, it marks her first acting project since 2018, when she exited Hollywood following her engagement and entry into the British royal family.
Since then, her focus has largely been on:
-Philanthropy through Archewell
-Content production, including Netflix projects
-Lifestyle ventures and public speaking
This cameo signals a measured, low-stakes return rather than a full-fledged acting comeback, especially after her show with Netflix has been discontinued.
This might also be a strategic move as it allows Markle to re-enter acting without heavy scrutiny as playing herself removes performance pressure and the cameo format will keep the spotlight controlled.
