What is the story about?
Three people were on Friday killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in Delhi's Tughlakabad area.
Officials said that a fire broke out in a five-storey building in Tughlakabad's Gali Number 1, and the authorities received the first report at around 2:30 am.
"A coordinated evacuation effort was carried out as heavy smoke engulfed the building, trapping several residents inside. Eight occupants were rescued from the structure and shifted to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari told PTI.
The police said that three people were declared dead, including a 22-year-old man and two women, and two injured persons remain in a critical condition and are undergoing treatment.
Officials said that preliminary inquiry suggests that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit on the ground floor of the building. Visuals from the site show charred two-wheelers in the parking of the building on the ground floor.
In addition to vehicles on the ground floor, including three scooters and a motorcycle, three floors —the ground, first, and second— have been completely burnt and the rest are partially burnt, according to Yashwant Meena, the Additional Divisional Officer Yashwant Meena of Delhi Fire Service.
"The DFS also climbed to terrace and after cutting terrace gate lock and entered in the building and two girls rescued from terrace of the house and rushed to hospital by CATS and PCR. Total eight persons rescued," Meena further said.
A witness, Rajender Kumar, said that he saw parked two-wheelers in the building on fire when he woke up after hearing loud cries for help.
"Residents formed a human chain, carrying buckets of water to help people evacuate. Police and fire brigade arrived shortly afterwards and began rescuing those trapped inside," said Kumar further said.
The Tughlakabad fire comes days after a massive fire broke out in a hotel in Delhi's Malviya Nagar, killing at least 21 people.
