What is the story about?
Two officers fired their guns at Alex Pretti, the nurse who was killed in Minnesota over the weekend during anti-ICE protests, a report from the Department of Homeland Security said.
The report lays down the findings from Customs and Border Protection’s initial investigation and says that one officer yelled "he's got a gun" multiple times before two others fired at Pretti.
“CBP personnel attempted to take Pretti into custody. Pretti resisted CBP personnel’s efforts and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, a (Border Patrol agent) yelled, ‘He’s got a gun!’ multiple times,” the report said.
"Approximately five seconds later, a (Border Patrol agent) discharged his CBP-issued Glock 19 and a (Customs and Border Protection officer) also discharged his CBP-issued Glock 47 at Pretti,” the report adds.
Pretti was pronounced dead after he was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center following the scuffle, where he was shot dead by officials.
Addressing the media outside the White House, US President Donald Trump confirmed that Department of Homeland Security Chief Krisit Noem will not be stepping down from her position.
Trump also addressed remarks made by his deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, who called Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old nurse killed by federal immigration agents on Saturday, an “assassin.”
“No,” Trump said when asked if he agreed with Miller’s description. “That being said, you can’t have guns, you can’t walk in with guns , you can’t do that. It’s a very unfortunate incident.”
Trump said he is overseeing the investigation personally and expects it to be “very honorable and honest.” He called the situation “very sad” and expressed sympathy for Pretti’s family.
Trump has said that he will “de-escalate” the situation in Minnesota after widespread outrage over the deployment of ICE agents and the subsequent killings of two people.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump hailed the efforts by ICE in the state, saying that “we took thousands of hardened criminals out of Minnesota.” He later went on to praise his border czar, Tom Homan, whom he sent to oversee on-the-ground operations.
“We have Tom Homan there now. We put him in there, he’s great. And they met with the governor, the mayor, everybody else. … We’re going to de-escalate a little bit,” he said.
