External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two sides explored opportunities for practical cooperation and greater complementarity in the region.
"Foreign Secretary @VikramMisri held a productive call with US Under Secretary of State Allison M Hooker to advance discussions on the India-US Indian Ocean Strategic Venture (IOSV) initiative, launched by the leaders of the two countries in February 2025," he wrote on X.
Jaiswal said the discussions covered areas where India and the US could work together while taking into account the priorities of partner countries in the Indian Ocean region.
"Both sides discussed opportunities for practical cooperation and complementarity in the Indian Ocean Region, including maritime security, strategic infrastructure and connectivity, in line with the priorities of partner countries," he said.
The Indian Ocean Strategic Venture (IOSV) is a bilateral initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump following their talks in Washington DC in February last year, aimed at expanding practical cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. The initiative focuses on areas including maritime security, strategic infrastructure, connectivity, investment and commerce, with both sides seeking greater coordination while taking into account the priorities of regional partner countries.
The initiative also fits into the broader India-US effort to strengthen connectivity and security across the Indian Ocean. The two countries have highlighted cooperation on undersea cable networks, including India's role in the maintenance, repair and financing of cables using trusted vendors, while also identifying potential partnerships across the Western Indian Ocean, West Asia and the Indo-Pacific in areas such as defence, technology, energy and critical minerals.
