What is the story about?
The year 2026 is going to be a massive one for elections. Over three dozen nations are set to go to the polls this year, including some of our neighbours. Bangladesh, under the interim Muhammad Yunus government, is set to hold its much-awaited polls in February – a month after Uganda, Portugal and Myanmar do so in January.
The middle of the year will see Sweden hold its parliamentary elections, and Russia’s State Duma go to the polls. In October, fellow Brics partner Brazil will hold elections that could prove consequential for the bloc, climate change and the Global South.
Then, in November, come the blockbuster midterm elections in America that will determine the future course of the Trump administration. New Delhi will be keeping a close eye on many of these elections that will impact India’s security, diplomatic and economic interests.
