What is the story about?
US President Donald Trump has slammed major US media outlets over their coverage of the Iran war, suggesting that even if Tehran "surrenders", America's "fake news media" will "headline that Iran had a Masterful and Brilliant Victory over The United States of America."
"If Iran surrenders, admits their Navy is gone and resting at the bottom of the sea, and their Air Force is no longer with us, and if their entire Military walks out of Tehran, weapons dropped and hands held high, each shouting “I surrender, I surrender” while wildly waving the representative White Flag, and if their entire remaining Leadership signs all necessary “Documents of Surrender,” and admit their defeat to the great power and force of the magnificent U.S.A, The Failing New York Times, The China Street Journal (WSJ!), Corrupt and now Irrelevant CNN, and all other members of the Fake News Media, will headline that Iran had a Masterful and Brilliant Victory over The United States of America."
Meanwhile, Iran has accused the US of repeatedly violating the ceasefire by carrying out attacks on Iranian commercial vessels.
The country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the US has continued "unlawful and unjust" actions since the announcement of a ceasefire and had committed “numerous maritime robberies” against Iranian commercial ships.
Iran's foreign ministry said US strikes in Iran's southern Hormozgan province, where Iranian media reported sounds of explosions early on Tuesday, represented a "gross violation" of a tenuous ceasefire in place for nearly seven weeks. The US said its attacks were defensive in nature, targeting missile sites and boats attempting to lay mines.
The US targeted Iranian missile launch sites and boats around the Strait of Hormuz in what its military described as “self-defence strikes”, amid a ceasefire and ongoing discussions to end the war permanently.
“US forces conducted self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” CENTCOM spokesman Timothy Hawkins told CNN.
He added, “Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines. US Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire.”
A senior official told Fox News that two Iranian boats were laying mines in the strait and that US forces also responded to an attack on one of its warplanes after a missile had targeted it.
