Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers, fishermen, and cattle
rearers, calling them a top national priority. Delivering his 12th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, he pledged to “stand like a wall” against any policy that could harm them, asserting there would be no compromise on their welfare.

“Bharat ke kisan, machhuware, pashupalak se judi kisi bhi ahitkaari neeti ke aage Modi deewar banke khada hai” — meaning, “Modi is standing like a wall in front of any policy against the interest of our farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers of India," PM Modi said without naming the US. His comment assumes significance as it has come in the backdrop of the failed trade talks between India and the US for host of issues including opening India's agriculture sector to American companies.
Highlighting India’s agricultural achievements, the Prime Minister noted that the country is now the world’s largest producer of milk, pulses, and jute, and the second-largest producer of fish, rice, wheat, fruits, and vegetables. He also pointed out that agro-product exports have crossed Rs 4 lakh crore.
PM Modi said that numerous schemes have been implemented to support the rural economy, with initiatives such as crop insurance encouraging farmers to take greater risks and embrace modern farming techniques. “Our farmers are becoming courageous with insurance,” he remarked.
