PM Modi speech on Independence Day 2025: While addressing the nation from the Delhi historical Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India's
commitment to self-reliance in the space sector. He highlighted the nation’s ambition and upcoming Gaganyaan mission to establish its space station. PM Modi further said, "The nation is proud of our space sector, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is back from the space station...in the days to come, he will return to India". He said India is working on becoming self-reliant in the space sector as well, and is preparing for the launch of Gaganyaan.
India to build its own Space Station
Here’s what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today, on 15 August 2025, about India building its own space station while addressing the nation on the 79th Independence Day.
PM Modi proudly highlighted the success of the group captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who returned from the International Space Station. He mentioned that Shukla will soon arrive back in India.
He reaffirmed the nation’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight program and declared, “We will make our own space station.
Prime Minister Modi also noted that more than 300 startups are currently engaged in the space sector, and thousands of young Indian are contributing to his effort, demonstrating the strength and confidence in the nation’s youth.
Bharatiya Anthariksh Station (BAS)
India's space station project, officially known as Bhartiya Antariksh Station (BAS), is already in development stages. The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the building of the first unit of the Bharatiya Anatriksh Station by extending the scope of Gaganyaan program. Approval by the cabinet is given for the development of the first module of Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS-1) and undertake missions to demonstrate and validate various technologies for building and operating BAS. Gaganyaan Programme will be a national effort led by ISRO in collaboration with Industry, Academia and other National agencies as stakeholders.
