Tragic Loss of Life
A somber event unfolded in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, where a Class 5 student succumbed to complications arising from a widespread food poisoning incident.
The student, who had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit on Monday due to a worsening condition, passed away on Tuesday. This marks a critical escalation in the health crisis that affected a significant portion of the student body at the Kokabandha Ashram School, a residential institution housing 240 students from Classes 1 to 8. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised serious concerns about the food served at the school.
Mass Illness Outbreak
The crisis began on Sunday morning when approximately 150 students experienced severe illness shortly after consuming 'pakhala,' a fermented rice dish, at the school's hostel mess. The affected students were initially rushed to the Rasagovindapur community health centre for immediate medical attention. As their conditions deteriorated, around 50 students were transferred to the more equipped Baripada Medical College for advanced care. While the immediate health of most students has stabilized, doctors are continuing to monitor them closely, highlighting the severity of the situation and the potential for lingering effects from the contaminated food.
Official Response and Investigation
In response to the grave incident, district authorities have taken swift action. Mayurbhanj District Collector Hema Kanta Say announced the suspension of the school's headmaster, Jayanta Kumar Panigrahi, and ordered a thorough inquiry into the matter. The investigation team is tasked with visiting the school, interacting with the students, and identifying the root causes of the food poisoning and the individuals responsible. The Collector assured that further actions would be determined based on the findings of the inquiry committee, emphasizing the commitment to accountability and preventing future occurrences. The Chief Minister has also expressed his condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh for the deceased student's family.
Parents Allege Negligence
Distraught parents have voiced strong allegations of negligence against the school authorities, claiming that the students were served stale and unwholesome food. Their distress escalated into an organized agitation following the student's death, with demands for immediate and stringent action against those found responsible. School officials have acknowledged these serious allegations and have pledged to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into them. They have assured that if the parents' claims are substantiated, appropriate legal and administrative measures will be implemented to address the lapses in food safety and school management.
