Yatra Suspension
The pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi has been suspended for 14 consecutive days due to severe weather conditions and multiple landslides within the region.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board announced the postponement of the Yatra, citing heavy rainfall in the Bhawan area of Jammu and Kashmir as the primary cause. This suspension is in effect until further notice and is intended to ensure the safety of pilgrims. The Banganga entrance gate serves as a visible symbol of the pause in the Yatra. The decision was made following safety concerns linked to persistent rainfall, which triggered landslides and blocked pathways leading to the shrine. These conditions have made movement unsafe for pilgrims. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has also experienced disruptions at various points because of landslides and related road damages, which has further complicated connectivity to the area.
Impact and Consequences
The extended suspension of the Vaishno Devi Yatra has brought widespread disappointment among the devotees who had planned their pilgrimage. In addition, local businesses that rely on the Yatra are also experiencing difficulties, particularly in the Katra region where the trek to the shrine begins. The initial suspension was triggered by a major landslide that occurred on August 26, resulting in 34 fatalities and several injuries. The disaster happened during the afternoon, around 3 pm, as heavy rains prompted a massive landslide near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari, situated approximately halfway along the 12-kilometer trek from Katra to the shrine. This event highlighted the severity of the weather-related challenges and reinforced the necessity of the safety measures undertaken by the Shrine Board.
