A Night of Festivity
On a Saturday night, the Dokadia family, residing in Mumbai's Pydhonie area, hosted a dinner for five relatives at their home. The gathering, which included
Abdullah Dokadia, 40, his wife Naseem, 35, and their daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13, proceeded normally. All nine individuals shared a meal around 10:30 PM. Following the dinner, the guests departed, leaving the family to their own devices. It was later, in the early hours of Sunday morning, that the family consumed watermelon, a detail that has become central to the ensuing investigation.
Sudden Illness Strikes
The night's events took a grim turn when, around 5:30 to 6:00 AM on Sunday, all four members of the Dokadia family began experiencing severe vomiting and loose motions. They initially received attention from their family doctor before being transferred to J J Hospital. The sudden onset and severity of their symptoms pointed towards a potential poisoning or severe foodborne illness. Tragically, the situation rapidly deteriorated, with the younger daughter, Ayesha, passing away at 10:15 AM. Her elder sister and mother, Naseem, succumbed later that day. Abdullah, who ran a mobile accessories shop in Andheri, was the last to pass away, at approximately 10:30 PM, leaving behind a community in shock.
Investigation Underway
The local J J Marg police have registered an accidental death report and launched a thorough investigation into the baffling circumstances surrounding the family's demise. Initial inquiries included examining the five guests who attended the dinner. Crucially, none of the guests exhibited any symptoms of illness, suggesting that the dinner itself, shared by all nine individuals, is unlikely to be the source of the problem. This observation has shifted the focus of the investigation towards other elements consumed by the family. Senior Inspector Rais Shaikh mentioned recording a statement from Abdullah before his passing, where he confirmed the family had eaten watermelon before sleeping.
Forensic Focus: Watermelon
In light of Abdullah's statement and the absence of illness among the guests, the police have intensified their examination of the watermelon consumed by the Dokadia family. Leftover dinner and a portion of the watermelon have been sent to the forensic science laboratory in Kalina for meticulous testing to detect any possible toxic substances. The post-mortem examinations have been conducted at J J Hospital, though the hospital has reserved its official opinion pending the results of the histopathological report. The police are awaiting the forensic report to shed light on the cause of this heart-wrenching tragedy.
