International Passenger Boom
Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has witnessed a substantial leap in its international passenger numbers, marking a significant 23.9%
increase over the past fiscal year. This surge contributed to an impressive total of 7.23 million international travelers navigating through KIA. While domestic traffic also saw a modest uptick of 3.3%, reaching 37.24 million passengers, the international segment was the primary driver of overall passenger growth. This led to a healthy 6.2% year-on-year increase in total passenger volume, consolidating Bengaluru's position as a crucial hub for global business and innovation, even amidst broader geopolitical concerns. The airport's strategic expansions and improved services have clearly resonated with international travelers, highlighting a strong demand for air travel connecting the city to the world.
Connectivity Expands Dramatically
During the 2025-26 fiscal period, connectivity from Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) saw a significant enhancement with the introduction of brand-new international routes. Travelers can now connect directly to Hanoi and Riyadh, expanding the airport's global reach. Beyond these new destinations, KIA also bolstered its existing network by increasing flight frequencies on several vital international routes. Key among these were London Heathrow, Bangkok, Bahrain, Jeddah, Phuket, Kuwait, Kathmandu, Munich, and Mauritius. This strategic expansion of both new and existing routes underscores KIA's commitment to facilitating seamless travel and strengthens its role as a pivotal international gateway. The busiest international sectors for passenger traffic remained Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, London Heathrow, and Kuala Lumpur, indicating sustained high demand for these popular corridors.
Transfer Traffic Takes Flight
The airport experienced a remarkable 22% year-on-year growth in transfer traffic, a key indicator of an airport's efficiency in facilitating journeys that involve changing planes. This statistic refers to passengers, baggage, or cargo that move between flights at an airport without it being their origin or final destination. While domestic transfers saw a more measured increase of 3.2%, international transfers exhibited exceptional performance, soaring by over 50%. This substantial surge in international transfers signals robust long-term potential and highlights the success of initiatives like 'Connections by BLR'. This program is specifically designed to refine the transfer experience and boost operational efficiency for airline partners, making it easier and more appealing for passengers to connect through KIA.
Domestic Routes Flourish
Complementing the international surge, Bengaluru's domestic air connectivity also demonstrated positive movement. Key domestic sectors that saw the highest passenger traffic included Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Pune, reinforcing their status as major travel arteries within the country. Furthermore, KIA continued to expand its domestic network by introducing new routes to destinations such as Navi Mumbai, Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, Bidar, Silchar in Assam, and Dimapur in Nagaland. These new domestic connections broaden travel options for passengers and contribute to the overall growth of air travel within India, further solidifying KIA's importance as a multimodal transportation hub serving both national and international travelers.
Operational Milestones Reached
The airport's operational capacity reached new heights during the reporting period, evidenced by a 4.5% year-on-year increase in air traffic movements, totaling 2,80,800. On an average day, the airport facilitated 769 flight movements, with a notable peak of 837 movements recorded on a single day, showcasing its ability to handle intensive operations. Passenger handling also set new records, with an impressive 139,111 travelers processed in a single day, reflecting the airport's growing capacity and efficiency in managing large volumes of passengers. These figures underscore the airport's robust infrastructure and its successful management of increased flight and passenger activity.
Cargo Operations Expand
Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has also maintained a strong trajectory in its cargo operations, achieving a 6% increase in volume and handling a total of 5,32,000 metric tonnes over the year. This sustained growth in cargo is supported by a comprehensive network comprising 15 cargo airlines. These airlines connect Bengaluru to 38 destinations, including major global hubs such as Chicago, Singapore, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, facilitating efficient international trade and logistics. The recent launch of the AISATS BLR Logistics Park has further enhanced the airport's cargo capacity and processing capabilities, reinforcing its position as a vital hub for air cargo movement and supporting businesses reliant on timely and efficient freight transport.
