Understanding The Annual Pass
Launched on Independence Day in 2025, the NHAI FASTag Annual Pass aims to simplify national highway journeys for those who travel frequently. This initiative
has already seen substantial adoption, with over 5 million motorists now utilizing the pass. It accounts for nearly 28 percent of all car toll transactions on national highways, demonstrating its growing appeal. Importantly, this pass is exclusively for toll plazas situated on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE). It will not be recognized at toll booths on state highways, private roads, or expressways managed by state governments. The decision to purchase this pass is entirely optional; travelers can continue using their standard FASTag for per-trip toll payments if they prefer not to opt for the annual scheme.
Who Can Benefit?
The FASTag Annual Pass is specifically designed for the owners of private vehicles, including cars, jeeps, and vans, who regularly navigate national highways. Instead of incurring toll charges at each individual toll plaza, purchasing this annual pass allows for numerous highway crossings. The pass is valid for either up to 200 toll crossings or a duration of one year, whichever of these limits is reached first. This provides a cost-effective and convenient alternative for individuals who spend a considerable amount of time on the country's national highway network, streamlining their travel experience.
Digital Payment Shift
A significant trend across national highway toll plazas is the increasing mandatory nature of digital payments. Drivers are now expected to settle their toll fees using either FASTag or UPI (Unified Payments Interface). For vehicles that do not have a FASTag installed, there is a penalty system in place. These drivers may face an additional charge of 25 percent if paying via UPI, or potentially double the standard toll amount if they opt for cash payment. This push towards digital methods aims to expedite the toll collection process and enhance efficiency across the network.
Cost Revision and Savings
Beginning April 1, 2026, the price of the FASTag Annual Pass will see a modest increase of Rs 75 per year. Despite this upward revision, the pass is still poised to offer substantial financial advantages for frequent highway travelers. The cost per individual toll trip remains considerably lower when using the annual pass compared to paying the standard toll charges for each separate highway crossing. This ensures that those who rely on national highways for their regular commute will continue to experience significant savings over the course of the year.
Pass Validity Details
The NHAI FASTag Annual Pass is valid for a period of one full year, commencing from the date it is activated. Alternatively, the pass remains active until the user completes 200 toll trips, with the validity expiring upon whichever condition is met first. Once either the one-year mark is reached or the 200-trip limit is achieved, the pass will expire. At this point, users have the option to renew their annual pass or revert to paying individual toll charges for each subsequent highway journey.
FASTag's Dominance
Since its introduction in 2016, FASTag has firmly established itself as India's predominant system for electronic toll collection. Official government figures indicate that approximately 11.86 crore FASTags have been issued nationwide. Out of these, a significant number, close to 5.9 crore, are currently active users, highlighting the widespread adoption and integration of this technology into the daily lives of Indian drivers and commuters across the country.
Application Process
Motorists interested in obtaining or renewing their NHAI FASTag Annual Pass can conveniently do so through the Rajmarg Yatra App. Alternatively, applications can be submitted via the official websites managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Following the successful payment process, the annual pass is linked to the existing FASTag. Typically, activation of the pass is completed within a 24-hour timeframe after the payment is processed.
Activation Steps
To activate your FASTag Annual Pass, the initial step is to log in to your account associated with your FASTag. You will then need to provide your vehicle's registration details and a registered mobile number. Proceed to complete the payment using your preferred method, which can include UPI, debit or credit cards, or net banking. Once the payment transaction is successfully processed, the annual pass is automatically associated with your FASTag. The activation process usually takes around 24 hours, after which you can enjoy the benefits of the pass for one year or up to 200 toll crossings.
