Sleeper Train Greenlit
A significant step forward in India's rail modernization efforts has been taken with the approval of a new Vande Bharat sleeper train service linking Bengaluru
and Mumbai. This decision follows closely on the heels of the successful launch of a similar service between Kamakhya and Howrah. The Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, officially sanctioned this new route, aiming to bolster long-distance rail travel options across the nation. This initiative is a key component of the government's broader strategy to introduce 12 new sleeper Vande Bharat rakes by the end of December 2026, underscoring a commitment to improving passenger convenience and travel efficiency for inter-city routes. The proposed service will operate between the KSR Bengaluru railway station and the Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, promising a significant upgrade in the travel experience for commuters between these two vital economic hubs.
Enhanced Connectivity Promised
The upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper train service between Bengaluru and Mumbai is poised to revolutionize travel between these two bustling metropolises. Passengers can anticipate a journey marked by modern amenities and a streamlined travel experience, potentially reducing overall travel time. The introduction of this service signifies the ongoing expansion of the Vande Bharat network, which has already proven popular for its efficiency and comfort. The Vande Bharat trains, since their inception on the New Delhi-Varanasi route in February 2019, have facilitated over 100,000 trips, serving more than 91 million passengers. The growth trajectory is evident, with approximately 39.8 million passengers utilizing the service in FY24-25 alone, showcasing a robust year-on-year increase of nearly 34% from the 29.7 million passengers in FY23-24. This consistent demand highlights a strong passenger preference for high-quality, fast rail travel options.
Sleeper Service Success
The efficacy and passenger appeal of Vande Bharat sleeper trains have been further validated by the performance of the inaugural Kamakhya-Howrah service. In its initial 119 trips, spanning just over three months, this route achieved an impressive occupancy rate exceeding 100 percent, accommodating approximately 1.21 lakh passengers. This exceptional uptake underscores a significant demand for comfortable overnight rail travel. The success of this service reflects a growing trust and preference among passengers for premium rail experiences, especially on longer routes. The positive reception of the Kamakhya-Howrah line sets a strong precedent for the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper, suggesting that it too is likely to be met with high demand and passenger satisfaction, further contributing to the overall success and expansion of the Vande Bharat sleeper train program across India.
