UK Goes Digital
The United Kingdom has embraced a fully digital immigration system, phasing out physical visa stickers in passports from February 25, 2026. Successful
applicants will now receive their visa electronically via the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) platform. This innovative approach links your visa status directly to your passport, allowing real-time verification by airlines and border officials. While biometrics collection will still involve visits to visa centres, your passport will typically be returned post-appointment. This transition aims to bolster security, combat fraud, and accelerate border control processes for greater efficiency.
Japan: Appointment Needed
Travellers aspiring to visit Japan should be aware of a new procedural requirement implemented in March 2026. Visa applications submitted in key Indian cities, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Puducherry, and Bengaluru, now mandate a prior appointment. Walk-in submissions are no longer an option. This measure is in place to effectively manage the escalating demand for Japanese visas and to optimize the processing workflow at VFS Global centres. It is highly recommended for applicants to initiate their visa process well in advance and ensure all necessary documentation, such as itinerary details, proof of accommodation, and financial statements, are meticulously prepared before their scheduled appointment.
France: Student Friendly
France is actively working to simplify the student visa application process for Indian nationals, a strategic move to attract a greater influx of international scholars. With an ambitious target of issuing 30,000 student visas annually by 2030, the country is rolling out revised study visa regulations for Indian students. This initiative encompasses fostering broader academic collaborations, streamlining application procedures, and enhancing the efficiency of visa processing for students intending to study at French educational institutions. This aligns perfectly with France's overarching objective to significantly increase the number of Indian students pursuing higher education in France over the coming years, with a particular focus on disciplines such as business, technology, and hospitality.
Sri Lanka: Nomad Visa
Sri Lanka has launched a dedicated digital nomad visa, specifically designed for remote workers eager to reside and work from the island nation for an extended duration. This new visa category is anticipated to draw a considerable number of freelancers, entrepreneurs, and professionals who wish to embrace remote work while simultaneously exploring the diverse attractions of this beautiful country. It offers a unique opportunity for individuals to blend their professional lives with the experience of living in a new cultural landscape.
Armenia: Visa Free
In a significant development for Indian travellers, Armenia has officially extended its visa-free entry policy to include holders of Indian passports. This means that Indian citizens can now explore Armenia without the need for a pre-arranged visa, thereby simplifying travel planning and enabling more spontaneous trips. This forward-thinking policy is a key component of Armenia's broader strategy to stimulate tourism from India, a rapidly growing market for outbound international travel, and to foster stronger bilateral relations.
