GMSH-16 Evening OPD Success
Since its launch on February 24, the evening Outpatient Department (OPD) at Chandigarh's Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, has been
met with overwhelming approval from the public. In its inaugural week alone, over 400 patients utilized this extended service, which offers consultations in crucial departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Gynaecology. The Medicine Department, in particular, has experienced the highest patient volume, with a noticeable increase in working professionals seeking specialist advice. This shift has had a beneficial effect on the hospital's emergency department, leading to a reduction in non-critical cases. The OPD operates daily from 5 pm to 7 pm, providing a much-needed alternative for those unable to visit during standard daytime hours. This positive uptake has directly influenced the Health Department's decision to replicate this successful model elsewhere.
Manimajra Expansion Plans
Encouraged by the remarkable success and patient satisfaction garnered by the evening OPD at GMSH-16, the Health Department is now set to introduce a similar service at the Manimajra Civil Hospital. This expansion will commence with the same five key departments that have proven most beneficial: Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Gynaecology. Dr. Suman Singh, Director of Health Services, confirmed that the positive feedback from GMSH-16 serves as a strong impetus for this strategic move. The goal is to further enhance healthcare accessibility within the city, ensuring that more residents, especially those with demanding work schedules, can receive timely medical attention without compromising their daily routines. This initiative is a testament to the department's commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure and making essential medical services more convenient and readily available across different areas.
Broader Healthcare Impact
The 500-bed GMSH-16 facility is a vital healthcare hub, not only serving the residents of Chandigarh but also accommodating a significant number of referral cases from surrounding regions. Officials are optimistic that the evening OPD initiative will play a pivotal role in distributing the patient load more equitably across the day. This, in turn, is expected to ease the pressure on tertiary care centers within the city. The overarching objective is to fortify the public healthcare system and improve access for individuals who face challenges in seeking treatment during conventional working hours. Beyond the OPD expansion, Manimajra Civil Hospital, with its 100-bed capacity, has already seen the introduction of specialized services this year, including psychiatry, dermatology, and paediatrics consultations provided by specialists for two hours. This development has already enabled patients from Manimajra and neighboring areas like Panchkula and Kishangarh to receive care locally, saving them the time and expense of traveling to GMSH-16 or the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32).
Trauma Centre Development
Further bolstering healthcare infrastructure, the Manimajra Civil Hospital is slated to receive a new 50-bed trauma center. The Health Department received the necessary approval from the Ministry of Health in February to commence the process for this much-needed facility. Despite initial delays attributed to land allocation challenges, the department has now successfully secured a three-acre vacant plot directly opposite the Manimajra Civil Hospital for its construction. The establishment of this trauma center is anticipated to significantly improve the accessibility of emergency care in the region, thereby reducing travel times for patients and ensuring prompt medical intervention for those suffering from traumatic injuries. Dr. Singh expressed confidence that the center will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge medical care, capable of serving patients from Manimajra and the surrounding vicinities effectively.
