Artistic Streets Emerge
Five prominent lanes within Mumbai's historic Kala Ghoda precinct have undergone a significant urban metamorphosis, embracing a design ethos inspired by
beloved European pedestrian thoroughfares. These streets, namely VB Gandhi Marg (formerly Forbes Street), Ropewalk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road, now feature beautifully laid cobblestone pathways. Adding to their aesthetic appeal, the surrounding walls have been adorned with captivating murals, and thoughtfully placed street art installations and artefacts punctuate the walkways, creating an immersive visual experience. The overarching objective of this ambitious beautification project, spearheaded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is to elevate Kala Ghoda into a vibrant cultural promenade, prioritizing pedestrian enjoyment and enhancing its unique heritage character. The precinct now offers dedicated areas for seating, encouraging leisurely strolls and social interaction, all within a revamped 3,433 square metre space designed to draw in visitors and art enthusiasts alike.
Weekend Pedestrian Haven
To foster a more serene and accessible environment, the Kala Ghoda precinct is set to implement restrictions on vehicular traffic during weekends. This initiative transforms the designated lanes into exclusive pedestrian zones on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the cultural offerings without the usual urban disturbances. The implementation of hydraulic bollards at various entry points serves as a physical deterrent to unauthorized vehicle access, ensuring the integrity of the pedestrian-only policy. This strategic move is designed to create a safer, more engaging, and aesthetically pleasing public space, significantly enhancing the visitor experience in this beloved heritage district. The concept, championed by local corporator Makarand Narwekar, draws inspiration from successful pedestrianized streets in global cities like Glasgow and London, aiming to replicate their vibrant atmosphere and pedestrian-centric design principles within Mumbai.
Future Enhancements Planned
Looking beyond the immediate beautification, the Kala Ghoda precinct is slated for further development with the addition of a substantial underground parking facility. This facility, designed to accommodate approximately 200 vehicles, is currently under construction and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the current year. This future addition aims to alleviate parking concerns for visitors, thereby supporting the increased footfall expected due to the enhanced pedestrian experience. The project's journey began in December 2025, following a successful pilot phase conducted by the BMC to ascertain the viability and positive impact of converting these historic lanes into pedestrian-friendly zones. The successful completion of this pilot paved the way for the comprehensive redesign and transformation that is now being unveiled, promising a more integrated and accessible cultural destination for the city.
