Summer Special Services
As the peak summer season coincides with the crucial state elections in West Bengal, a significant number of Bengali residents in Surat have expressed
a strong desire to travel back to their hometowns. To accommodate this demand, special train services, often referred to as 'Summer Special Trains', have been arranged by the Western Railway. These services are designed to bridge the geographical gap, ensuring that individuals can participate in the electoral process and reconnect with their families during the holidays. The initiative aims to provide a structured and convenient travel option, particularly for artisans and other community members who might otherwise face challenges in securing confirmed tickets during such high-demand periods. The request for these special trains originated from community leaders who recognized the pressing need for dedicated transport. The first of these special trains departed from Surat's Udhna railway station, carrying a substantial number of passengers, signaling the commencement of a vital travel corridor.
Operational Details
The operational phase of these special trains involved a series of departures from Surat to various key destinations within West Bengal. The Udhna railway station in Surat served as the primary departure point for these services. For instance, on April 19th, a Full Tariff Rate (FTR) train commenced its journey towards Howrah. Subsequent days saw further dedicated trains being dispatched: another service headed for Santragachi on April 20th, followed by departures to Durgapur on April 21st and 22nd. The schedule continued with two more trains leaving for Santragachi and Malda on April 22nd, and additional services planned for Durgapur on April 23rd. This meticulously planned schedule aimed to cater to a wide range of travel needs across different regions of West Bengal. The request for these FTR trains, submitted by Basudev Adhikari, president of the Surat Bengali Samaj Welfare Trust and a local BJP leader, specifically targeted dates such as April 19th, 24th, and 26th, indicating a proactive approach to managing the anticipated passenger influx. The railway authorities responded by organizing these services to facilitate the journey for a large number of people.
Community Facilitation
The Surat Bengali Samaj Welfare Trust, spearheaded by Basudev Adhikari, has played an instrumental role in facilitating these special train arrangements. Recognizing the collective need of the Bengali community in Surat to travel back to their native state, the Trust proactively engaged with the Western Railway. A formal request was submitted to the general manager in Mumbai, outlining the necessity for 'Summer Special Trains' to Howrah and other destinations. This advocacy was crucial in initiating the services, drawing parallels to arrangements made during previous large-scale events like the Bihar assembly elections. The Trust has been actively collecting application forms from approximately 5,000 individuals who wish to undertake the journey. This data collection effort helps in gauging the exact demand and ensuring that the special train services are adequately planned and executed to meet the community's needs. By providing direct support and coordinating with railway authorities, the Trust ensures that Bengali artisans and other community members can confirm their railway tickets and travel home comfortably.
