Scorching City Conditions
Lucknow is enduring a severe heatwave, with daytime temperatures climbing to an alarming 43 degrees Celsius. Mornings are already hot by 8 am, making for
an exceptionally harsh April. The Meteorological Department has predicted a high of 43°C, accompanied by dry, hot winds that offer no relief throughout the day. A heatwave alert has been issued for April 25 and 26, signaling the severity of the situation. This follows a similarly blistering Friday, where Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of approximately 43°C, a significant 3.4 degrees above the normal temperature for this time of year. The minimum temperature was also slightly elevated at 22.6 degrees Celsius. The air quality is further exacerbated by fluctuating humidity levels, swinging between a high of 53 percent and a low of 11 percent, contributing to a dry and oppressive atmosphere that feels parched and relentless.
Statewide Heat Intensity
The extreme heat is not confined to Lucknow; it's a widespread issue across Uttar Pradesh. Banda registered the highest temperature in the state at a staggering 44.2 degrees Celsius, while Sultanpur and Prayagraj also experienced intense heat, with readings of 43.4°C and 43.2°C, respectively. Heatwave conditions were officially recorded on Friday across numerous districts, including Meerut, Agra, Shahjahanpur, and Aligarh in western UP, and Hardoi, Varanasi, and Prayagraj in the eastern parts of the state. Across the entire state, temperatures are consistently ranging between 42°C and 47°C, triggering the heatwave warnings. Adding to the discomfort, hot nights are a possibility in some western UP regions, meaning residents get little to no cooling even after the sun sets, making it difficult to find respite from the oppressive heat.
Anticipated Weather Shift
Fortunately, a change in weather patterns is expected to bring relief starting from Sunday. A western disturbance is forecast to influence the region, bringing light rain to western Uttar Pradesh from April 26. This weather system is predicted to gradually move eastward, extending its impact across the state. Between April 26 and 28, residents can anticipate light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. This meteorological shift is expected to lower temperatures by a significant 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, offering a much-needed break from the current sweltering conditions. Meaningful relief from the intense heatwave is projected to be felt after April 27, as the cooler weather system takes hold and dissipates the extreme heat.
Health Advisory Issued
In light of the ongoing severe heatwave, health advisories are being issued to residents to protect themselves from the extreme temperatures. Until the anticipated relief arrives after April 27, it is strongly advised that people stay indoors during the peak afternoon hours when the sun's intensity is highest. Maintaining proper hydration is crucial; drinking plenty of water and other fluids is essential to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Furthermore, individuals are urged to avoid direct exposure to the sun as much as possible. This includes minimizing outdoor activities and seeking shade whenever venturing outside. Adhering to these precautions will help mitigate the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures and the current heatwave conditions.
