New Sleeper Corridor Launched
Indian Railways has officially greenlit the nation's second Vande Bharat sleeper corridor, responding to the overwhelming success and demand witnessed
after the initial rollout of the Assam-Bengal Vande Bharat sleeper. This strategic expansion aims to enhance premium overnight travel options. The newly approved route will connect two of India's pivotal economic hubs: Bengaluru and Mumbai. This initiative represents a significant stride in the nation's ongoing endeavor to modernize its long-distance rail network. Passengers can anticipate a travel experience characterized by increased speed, contemporary amenities, and reliable daily overnight connectivity between these two major metropolises. The Ministry of Railways has confirmed that this new service is slated to operate between KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai, marking a substantial upgrade from existing travel options.
Enhanced Travel Experience
The introduction of the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper service is set to revolutionize overnight inter-city rail journeys. This advanced train is designed to offer a significantly reduced travel time compared to current options, aiming to rival short-haul flights for overnight travelers. Key features include modernized berths and interiors, ensuring a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment for passengers. Furthermore, the train is engineered for improved ride quality, minimizing disturbances during the journey, and boasts enhanced safety features for greater peace of mind. This focus on comfort, speed, and technology aims to transform the perception of overnight train travel in India, making it a preferred choice for both business and leisure travelers.
Success of First Sleeper
The remarkable reception of India's inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, which commenced operations between Kamakhya and Howrah, underscores the growing appetite for premium rail travel. This first service achieved an outstanding occupancy rate exceeding 100% within its initial three months, transporting over 1.2 lakh passengers. This success validates the Vande Bharat sleeper concept and its potential to transform long-distance journeys. The broader Vande Bharat network, since its launch in 2019, has already served an impressive nine crore passengers, highlighting the overall positive impact of this modern train series on Indian Railways. The overwhelming response to the first sleeper route has clearly paved the way for further expansion.
Service Details & Distance
Railway sources indicate that the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper service will utilize two dedicated rakes, with one operating from each city. This arrangement will facilitate a daily overnight service in both directions, ensuring consistent connectivity. The distance between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai and KSR Bengaluru is approximately 1153 kilometers. Current travel options on this route are significantly longer, with the Udyan Express taking over 23 hours and even faster trains requiring nearly 19 hours. The Vande Bharat sleeper is projected to drastically cut this travel time, completing the journey in an estimated 12 to 13 hours, offering a considerable advantage to travelers seeking efficiency and comfort.
